Paperwork Requirements for German Citizens
Primary tabs
For German citizens wishing to marry in Italy, an "Ehefahigkeitszeugnis" certificate is requested (which is a certificate of "Free Status") stating that you are legally free to marry. This certificate must be issued on an international form (multilingual) as according to the Convention of Munich signed on 5th September 1980.
The certificate is issued by the town hall's authorities in Germany (where you reside or last residency in Germany if you now reside abroad). If you are a German citizen residing abroad, contact your nearest German Consulate as they will supply a list of documents needed to get the "Ehefahigkeitszeeugnis" in Germany done for you.
The "Ehefahigkeitszeugnis" is valid for three months, so it mus be issued during the last three months before your Wedding.
Please Note: In italy, women cannot re-marry before 300 days of her divorce or date of decease of previous spouse if widowed. Under some special circumstances, it is somentimes possible to obtain an authorization from the Italian Court authorities.
